Women are a strong force in this world. They are mothers, sisters, wives, and friends. They were created to bring beauty into existence and their voices are not only important, but necessary. Empowering women and amplifying their voice is something Yobel Market is extremely passionate about. We partner with several organizations whose purpose is to restore hope to women and girls who have been exploited and oppressed. These organizations offer vocational skills, provide fair wages, and give counseling and support. In doing this, hope and confidence can be restored, despite traumatic pasts.
According to UNWomen.org, "Increasing women and girls’ education contributes to higher economic growth. When more women work, economies grow". When you visit our boutique or shop online, you are directly partnering to empower women around the world.
On a personal note, this is something that I, today's writer, am extremely passionate about. I had the privilege of working with an amazing group of women in a previous job. These women lived in a difficult culture, where women aren't always seen and heard. They each carried something with them that society deemed "invaluable". Some had husbands who were in jail or deceased. Some were barren, others divorced, many had little or no education. For these reasons, they were a financial burden to their families and were unable to find work elsewhere. With our project they were able to receive training and make a fair wage. But my favorite part was watching them appreciate the beauty they created. The confidence and self-pride that was unearthed as they learned that products they had made were desired and sold (in international markets no less) was priceless. Payday was a good day, but the community of confident women that was established made everyday a great day!
On May 15th, Yobel Market will be partnering with sheispriceless.org, "a campaign to make a difference in the lives of oppressed women". Head on over to their site to join the campaign and see all you can do to make a difference in the lives of women around the globe. And don't forget to wear your pearls!
In honor of Mother's Day we want to say a huge thank you to all the women in this world. You are needed, strong, beautiful. We are thankful for your presence in lives and in the lives of your families!
“We need jobs, and we need a way to put our children in school.” This statement, spoken by internally displaced Ugandans, resonated with Yobel co-Founder, Sarah Ray.
If these strong, resilient, hardworking, motivated individuals had access to dignified work, they would be able to provide many things for themselves that charity would seek to do for them. Things like school fees, clean water, nutritious foods, secure housing, clothing, and transportation. Jobs sounded like a good way forward.
Yobel is proud to be the sole purveyor of Ethnotek products in the United States! Co-Owners, Clay & Emily Ross were initially drawn to this incredible company’s techno-hip bags because of their high utility features (like this camera bag designed by photographers) and strong ethic toward both people and planet. As a conscious consumer, you can feel good that Ethnotek’s slow-production materials are sourced in person from the villages where they are created. Each artisan piece is purchased directly from the person who made it, for a fair price.
